Mitchell Timms (b. 2003) is an emerging Australian artist raised and currently based in the rural Bellingen Shire. His practice fluidly combines drawing and etching, showcasing a distinctive illustrative style that stems from imagination, supported by a strong foundation in observational drawing.
Anatomy forms the base of his work, which is shaped by an intuitive, sculptural process of automatism—morphing organic and bodily structures into intricate figures and worlds. With an emphasis on linework and detail, Mitchell moves between mediums with a consistent hand, allowing each to bring something distinct to his growing body of work.
Over the past three years, he has developed a technical focus on both pencil and scribe-based mark-making—hatching, stippling, and engraving—alongside complex etching approaches including sugar-lift, aquatint, and hardground techniques.
Mitchell’s practice is rooted in his natural upbringing and shaped by a playful curiosity. The grotesque and abject are ever-present in his work, but never without a sense of underlying beauty and control. These themes offer fragments of narrative that invite personal interpretation—allowing viewers to co-author meaning through their own lived experiences.
In addition to exhibiting works in shows such as Quarter-Life Crisis at Goodspace Gallery (2024), Zephyr at Alpha House Gallery (2024), and as a finalist in the 2024 Mosman Youth Art Prize, Mitchell was awarded 3rd place in the 2025 Bellingen Youth Week Art Exhibition and was profiled in Coffs Coast Focus magazine (Feb 2025). He currently leads Never Never Not Drawing, a local artist group in the Bellingen Shire that fosters connection and shared creative practice through open, welcoming gatherings for artists of all levels.
